How does all of this work?

AcornHq is about bringing people together to plant trees to help offset the carbon emissions associated with your iPod (and iPhones). Start by helping to plant a tree and selecting the type of iPod you'd like to offset. Once enough people have joined a tree we then plant your tree in the South Island of New Zealand. You can then show off your tree on your website or blog.

Why trees?

Trees are excellent systems for extracting and absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Other advantages of trees are that they are low cost and low on maintenance requirements. Not only are they visually appealing, but the mature (finished) product has other uses. See also: What happens to the trees?

Where are the trees planted?

The trees are planted at Blockhill in Canterbury, a province of New Zealand's South Island. You can view the planting farm on Google Maps:

What trees do you plant?

Oak trees, of course! (Acorns!)

What happens to the trees?

Throughout the tree's life they are pruned and maintained to reduce the risk of fire hazards. When the tree reaches the end of it's life, the plan is for any timber produced by the trees to go into community housing projects.

Why does AcornHq treat all iPods the same?

The carbon emitted by each iPod model certainly varies, and it varies between each individual iPod owner too. We all live in different parts of the world and we use our iPods in different ways. Based on our research to date we decided to match 20 iPod owners to a tree. If you have more information about the carbon emissions of iPod manufacturing, transportation or use, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

How do I put my tree on my website?

The first step is to login to MyAcorns where you'll be able to see the details of any iPods you've offset. From there you'll be able to find information on how to put your tree on your blog or website.

My iPod isn't in the list. What do I do?

If you have an older iPod that isn't our list, try to match with the newer model that is listed. For instance, if you have an iPod Mini, choose an iPod Nano. If you have one of the early original iPods, choose the iPod Classic.

I want to offset something other than an iPod.

Get in touch and let us know what you'd like to offset. At this stage we're purely focused on iPods (and iPhones). Your feedback on this area will have a big impact on our future plans.
